1. Modern charging technologies - overview

In recent years, chargers for mobile phones and mobile devices have come a long way. We are no longer just talking about the "simple charger", but about technologies designed for speed, energy efficiency and safety. In the Vetter ecosystem, four concepts are essential:

  • Qi2: the new global standard for magnetic wireless charging, with precise alignment and better stability than classic Qi.

2. GaN - big power in compact format

GaN (Gallium Nitride) is a technology used inside chargers to enable high power (30W, 65W, 100W) in a much smaller body compared to traditional silicon-based chargers. Better efficiency means less wasted energy in the form of heat and a compact profile, ideal for office and travelling.

  • When GaN makes sense: you charge phones + tablets + laptop from the same charger or have devices with high power requirements.

3. Qi2 - universal magnetic wireless charging

Qi2 is the evolution of the Qi standard for wireless charging and introduces magnetic alignment similar to MagSafe. This means that the wireless pad or stand attaches more precisely to the back of your phone, reducing loss and improving charging stability.

4. MagSafe - the Apple ecosystem for iPhone

MagSafe is Apple's ecosystem for magnetic wireless charging on iPhone. On the back of the phone is a ring of magnets integrated around the charging coil; compatible chargers and accessories attach exactly at that point for a stable connection.

5. Fast Charging PD / PPS - fast charging on cable

6. How to choose the right charger

To make the right choice, consider your devices, your usage scenario and the number of ports you need:

  • Phone only (iPhone / Android): a 20-30W PD adapter is sufficient. If you want desktop tidiness, add a Qi2 / MagSafe pad or stand.
  • Phone + tablet / laptop: go GaN 45-65W with 2-3 USB-C ports so you can charge multiple devices simultaneously.
  • Frequent travellers: choose compact GaN chargers, Qi2 / MagSafe compatible external batteries and rugged Type-C cables.
  • Inthe car: a PD car charger + a magnetic holder (MagSafe / Qi2) to secure your phone while travelling.

7. Frequently Asked Questions about charging technologies

1. What is the difference between GaN and a conventional charger?

GaN chargers use a more efficient semiconductor material, which allows high power in smaller enclosures and with less heat released. Basically, you can have 65W or 100W in a compact adaptor, ideal for multiple devices simultaneously.

2. Are Qi2 and MagSafe the same thing?

Qi2 is a universal standard for magnetic wireless charging, adopted by several manufacturers (including Apple and Samsung), while MagSafe is Apple's ecosystem of magnetic iPhone accessories. The magnetic principle is similar, but MagSafe remains specific to compatible iPhones.

3. Why do I need a good cable for fast charging?

Even if the adapter supports PD / PPS, the effective speed also depends on the cable. A cheap or uncertified cable can limit current, reduce speed or cause interruptions. Quality Type-C cables are essential for stable fast charging.

4. Do fast charging technologies affect your phone battery?

Modern phones intelligently manage charging and control current according to battery temperature and level. By using compliant chargers and quality cables, fast charging does not abnormally damage the battery - the device limits the speed when needed.

5. Which charger power should I choose for my phone?

In general, 20-30W is sufficient for a modern smartphone. If you want a single adaptor for phone + tablet/laptop, it's more efficient to choose a 45-65W GaN with multiple USB-C ports, and for large laptops you can go up to 100W.
